Fund Raising

It's that time of year!  There are about 10 different sales forms in the kitchen at my office; you can buy anything from summer sausage to wrapping paper!  I've noticed there are certain individuals that buy from every kid no matter what and I think - wow that is so nice!  I'm usually a Scrooge when it comes to this stuff and surprisingly Mr. Cheapo Phillipo, aka the man I married, is not!  I cannot even tell you how many magazines, chocolate bars and terrible home decorating items we've ended up with over the years because he says YES to every kid who comes to the door.

Maybe I'm a Scrooge because I was painfully shy and loathed fundraising as a kid.  I remember begging my Dad to take my forms to work like all the other parents did, but he wouldn't do it.  He told me if I wanted to make the sell I had to come to his office and ask people in person.  Of course that did not happen and as a result I did not sell anything to anyone other than my parents but guess what? My school didn't collapse!   We still had an abundant amount of Kleenex to go around, we didn't have to prick our fingers for ink alternatives and we didn't have to eat peanut butter and jelly in the parking lot for prom as my history teacher, Mr. Wallace, predicted!

So this year seeing all those forms every time time I get a cup of coffee and wondering what it is my tax dollars pay for, the guilt got to me and I decided to be a little more giving on the fundraiser front.  I sponsored a walkathon and bought something out of a magazine.  Of course I immediately felt bad because there were two kids selling from the same magazine but truly only one thing interested me out of that entire thing so I had to choose one kid over the other ug! (I honestly chose without looking at the name on the form to be fair).  The same week I was home studying my little heart out when the door bell rang and surprise! there was a kid on the other side selling stuff for school.   I don't know what came over me but my new giving ways just flew out the window and I told him to beat it because I just bought a bunch of junk at work.  Actually I was much nicer than that but ug again!  Telling that kid no haunted me for the rest of the evening and I'll tell you why.  That kid didn't just have his parents do his dirty work for him by taking his forms up to their office and leaving them out in the break room.  He was going door to door to perfect strangers which not only takes courage but determination and I just shot him down!  I know he's got to face rejection at some point in his life but I could have spared the $10 - what is wrong with me?  I've always been shocked that AB says yes to every kid that comes to the door but now I get it!  AB is an extremely hard worker and in turn he appreciates hard workers no matter what type of work they are doing and let me tell you something, selling stuff door to door is hard work!

All of this has brought me to my new school fundraising policy.  I plan to go back to my old ways with the forms in the kitchen, unless there is something I absolutely can't live without, but if you come to my door I'll definitely say yes!  I hope none of my neighbors read this blog.  I look forward to a lifetime supply of gift labels ;)

**Side note - Edison Middle School be on the lookout for a gentleman of large stature looking for the summer sausage we ordered a month ago to support the music program but never received.  He will find you kid in the black shirt and glasses who plays the clarinet, he will find you!

Not So Wordless Wednesday: A Request

I interrupt my normal wordless post with a request. I'm requesting thoughts and prayers for our dear friends Dallas and Sarah. They received some disheartening news today about their sweet little Rhett. You can read about it by clicking here. AB has known Dallas and Sarah since college and they are one of the neatest couples I have the privilege of knowing. AB and I are just sick about what they are going through right now! Dallas and Sarah have admirable faith and I just know in my heart of hearts that everything is going to be ok! Thank you for thinking of them!

Milk and Cookie Party

This weekend my friend Alisha threw the cutest milk & cookie party for her daughter Emily's 1st birthday.

Invitations went out to convene at Emily's Sweet Shoppe

Aren't these the cutest cupcake toppers?

Lots of cookie choices

Jars for the milk

Quite the food spread

The cutest banners

Emily had fun opening all of her gifts, she was seriously interested in each and every one!

Something she wasn't so interested in...the cake! She wasn't sure what she thought of it but it sure looked good!

Sweet Emily with her Mom & Dad

All of Alisha's hard work paid off - it was a great party and I think Emily had lots of fun!

In Other Birthday News...

So yesterday I posted about my Dad's milestone birthday but I've celebrated a few other birthdays since then. It seems like everyone I know has a birthday! Ok lame joke :)

This little guy turned 2 and his parents threw him a Cars themed birthday party. He not only loves the movie but toy cars in general. He could play with matchbox cars for hours.

My SIL Erin made this fantastic cake and her mom made the super cute cupcakes. Erin surfed the web to get some ideas on how to do the cake. I think it turned out great!

My friend Karla turned "29" so we went to the Waterfront Grill to celebrate with dinner and drinks. I think Waterfront might be my new fave in town. I love the variety of their menu and the food is delish!

Last week my MIL Melissa also hit a milestone birthday, 65! I don't think she is too excited about the number but she looks great and that's all it is anyway, a number! I'll tell you who can't wait to turn 65, my husband. He's salivating just thinking about all those senior discounts ;)

We drove to Edmond on the night of her birthday and took her out to Boulevard Steakhouse. None of us had ever been and it was quite a treat! I loved the ambiance and thought the food was fabulous! Watch out Mahogany I might have a new favorite steak place!

The Big Six-0

Last month my Dad hit a milestone birthday - the big six-0! We helped him celebrate by having an intimate get together at my parent's house that included our immediate family and some close family friends.

I was in charge of invitations and decorations! I am very lucky that my BFF is so creative! I had her make the invitations using this picture of my Dad.

Unfortunately I don't have an image of said invitations but they were fabulous! Thank you Katie!

On to the decorations, which I kept pretty simple. I picked up some cute 60 themed items at Party City to put on the mantle and Katie helped me make the Happy Birthday banner with her Cricut. I really like how the banner turned out and I'm excited that I can use it for future birthday celebrations. I also had some 6o themed confetti that I spread around some of the tables.

My mom had a cake made with the invitation as inspiration. Isn't it great?! And it gives you an idea of what the invitations looked like. Super cute!

Here's the whole crew :) (AB is such a giant compared to my family) We had lots of fun! It was great to see family friends that I hadn't seen in many years and it was also a treat to have my MIL Melissa (unfortunately not pictured-where were you Melissa?) there to celebrate with us!

The Fifth Grade

Today at lunch my friend Karla was telling us she was a little anxious because her son had his first test of the school year today…Fifth Grade Social Studies. The continents, great lakes, etc, etc. She was praising his teacher for her use of mnemonics to help the kids remember various things such as Europe has five sons; Africa, Asia, Australia , Antarctica and America for all of the continents. This resulted in all of my friends reciting the mnemonics they learned in grade school and how they still remember them. I’ve always been jealous of everyone and their little mnemonics and learning songs. Apparently my grade school didn’t believe in this type of learning because I don’t know any fun songs or mnemonics. I can't even tell you what I learned in the fifth grade but I’ll tell you what I do remember: I relished my last year of recess. I loved my teacher, Mrs. Lang. My history teacher, Mr. Wiesner, drank warm milk every day (disgusting). My math teacher, Mr. Williams, was a creepo who had a mail-order bride from the Philippines, used to touch your back to see if you were wearing a bra and among other inappropriate things, asked a few girls if they had started their period (um yes he did eventually get fired for this). My fondest memory was reading the book Hatchet which happens to be my husband’s all time favorite book and may have been the last book he ever read – ha! So that pretty much sums up the fifth grade for me which might explain my major blonde moment of the day. One of the mnemonics mentioned at lunch was HOMES for the great lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior). As I was thinking of this mnemonic and reciting the names of the lakes in my head I got to one I couldn't think of and said – which lake starts with an R? The girls sitting near me thought they heard me wrong and gave me a weird look, so again I asked which one started with an R. It was killing me! I just couldn't figure it out until I realized the mnemonic HOMES doesn't even have an R in it which is why I couldn't think of the name of the lake! Yikes!

As I type this I’m thinking I may need to consider repeating the fifth grade, but then again I can tell you how to calculate Gross Domestic Product by using the mnemonic PIRATED: Profits of corporations & sole proprietors + Interest + Rental income + Adjustment to foreign income + Taxes + Employee salaries + Depreciation. So take that fifth grade!

The Early Bird Special

I wasn't feeling so hot today and as a result had soup for lunch. By the time I got off work I was starving! I decided to stop by Panera on my way home to grab some of their amazing mac-n-cheese. It was Five O'clock on the dot when I arrived and I was the youngest person ordering dinner by at least 40-50 years! This begs the question, at what age do you start eating between the hours of 4:00pm - 6:00pm on a regular basis? On average AB and I eat around 8:00pm which is late for most of us here in middle America but we're very metropolitan ;) I just can't imagine eating at 5:00pm every day! I guess if you get up with the sun and go to bed by 9:00pm it might seem like a natural time to have dinner? I just want to know when the progression of having dinner so early starts. Is it gradual or does it just happen one day? I admit to partaking in early bird specials while in college, but I was poor and eating at 4:00pm didn't seem so bad when you started your day at 2:00pm. I know this transition is far off but it still scares me, I want to hold on to sleeping in and eating late as long as I can!
