Ash Wednesday

I was all prepared to do a Fat Tuesday post and share some of my latest kitchen creations with you but Blogger just wasn't cooperating.  Here it is, late on Wednesday and I'm too tired to dig through pictures and write about recipes so I'll save it for another day.  Instead I want to touch on the subject of Lent since Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent.  Lent lasts for 40 days, ending on Easter Sunday.  I'm not really religious but I still like observing Lent.  Some form of penitence now and then is just good for the soul!

One year I gave up pop and ended up not drinking it for an entire year.  The hardest thing I ever did was give up caffeine.  I had a headache for the first two weeks but managed to pull through!  This year I got my idea from Daisi.  Her mom has done this for the past few years and I think it's a wonderful idea!  For every $dollar I spend on eating out during Lent, I will donate a $dollar to the food bank.  This will be any meal I eat by myself and all meals with AB.  I'm guessing I will be shocked by the amount I end up donating considering I eat out almost everyday for lunch and usually a couple of times on the weekend.  It's something I take for granted and this will definitely be a humbling experience given there are so many people out there who cannot afford the luxury of ever eating out!  I'm very excited that my commitment will be helping the food bank! Unfortunately they have been hit by the economy, with more people in need of food and less people able to make donations.  AB and I volunteered there back in December and it was an awesome experience!  If you haven't ever done it - you should!  If you have kids, it would be a great family activity :)

Do you usually give something up for Lent?  What are you giving up this year?

  1. That's a nice thing to do! I can only imagine how much I'd have to donate...a small fortune, I'm sure!

I'm giving up alcohol again this year. Sigh.

  2. I'm giving up desserts, well, all sweets. I sent this to my mom so she knows she inspired you! I'm anxious to see your total donation (if you share it with me, that is).

  3. The other thing that I have seen promoted during Lent is to "add" something e.g. going to church more, reading the Bible, attending a Bible study, spending more time in prayer, etc. That is what I have opted for but I do think what you are doing is a fantastic idea and might even incorporate it myself.
True confession, I wanted to pig out on Fat Tuesday but had my yearly physical for my cholesterol check etc. on Thursday and wanted to keep my weight down. Pay off: I weigh 10#'s less than a year ago (4 left to goal) and I'm the picture of health according to my Dr. Aren't you glad? Ha!
